Introduction
Momexx Mould Making Experts has extensive experience in the development and production of injection moulds for the caps and closures market segment. Kornelis Caps & Closures, a manufacturer of caps and clever locking systems for the packaging industry, approached Momexx to produce a universal cap in four different diameters, principally for use within the consumer market.
Problem statement
As the client focuses its activities on the manufacture and development of standard plastic caps, lids and other closures, Momexx was asked to develop a mould with which a universal screw cap could be produced with a short cycle time in order to reduce the client's production costs. In addition, the client required that the moulds be designed so that in-mould labeling (IML) would be possible.
Moulds and craftsmanship
Momexx - plastic molds manufacturer – prepared a complete mould design which met the required cycle time. The cycle time was reduced because the cap has a thin wall width making it therefore lighter in weight.. Through the use of an advanced cooling system with the project, Momexx was further able to reduce the cycle time as the plastic could be cooled more rapidly and the production speed increased whilst the required quality demands continued to be met.
Momexx was also required to prepare the moulds so that IML could be used. The use of IML guarantees the quality and location of the image more effectively and also benefits lowered production costs compared to that of placing stickers on the cap afterwards.
End result
Throughout the production process Momexx tested the products in front of the client so that the quality, cycle time and the functioning of the moulds could be approved by the customer. This direct communication resulted in the production capacity of the client being undisturbed as the moulds could be used directly in production.
The project was successfully completed by Momexx Mould Making Experts following a production time of approximately fourteen weeks.
